Squirrel ROG Videos

Hi Darcy,

Since the Squirrel wing was fixed, I decided to try to video a ROG. I got up at 6 AM so I could get over to the park before the wind picked up. I got three launches. Did I tell you how much Squirrels like trees? Good thing I had my Jackite pole. I decided to use the method of video I used for the hand launches; put the camera on delay and hold the prop with the camera hand until the camera beeps, then let go of the plane. The first launch the camera strap fouled the prop and the plane took off at a right angle to where I pointed it. Nice climb and high circle, right into a tree. Fortunately not too high to reach with the pole, no damage.  The video is overexposed because exposure was set while the camera was pointed into the shade.   After that, I pointed the camera into a sunny area while the exposure was being set.

Relaunched after recovery and it did a low circle followed by a perfect landing, not on camera. I removed the strap from the camera. Next flight went high and wide, beyond the trees and hit the chain link fence.

Third flight went high and wide in the other direction, going in among a cluster of trees on the other side. It tumbled down without help. I broke the trailing edge spar while untangling the motor knots, so went home. By the time the glue was dry, leaves were fluttering in the wind.

Motor was 19 5/8″ of 3/32″ with 1,800 turns (76%). About 46 seconds in the air before running into the tree. We know the Squirrel does very good ROG and landings.  I just wish I could get you a good, clear video of a complete ROG flight, from takeoff to landing.  I will keep trying.

Here is a picture of the ROG Squirrel:
